Can a Movie Change the Law?
Переглядів 174 тис.Місяць тому
The 1961 film VICTIM isn't just a tense thriller. It was crafted to serve as a stealthy challenge to a British law that criminalized the very existence of homosexuals. It was a law that many had tried - and failed - to overturn. But at the dawn of the swinging sixties, a new challenge emerged. VICTIM brought together an unlikely team of writers, producers, and a matinee idol named Dirk Bogarde ...

Transforming a Gay Truck Driver into the Biggest Star in Hollywood: Rock Hudson's Rise & Fall
Переглядів 571 тис.5 місяців тому
In the middle of the 1950s, America fell in love with Rock Hudson. Ranked the #1 box office draw in the country, Rock was an American ideal of masculinity - strong, confident, and above all, romantic. But the figure that America worshiped as the perfect man was really a façade propped up by years of scheming and betrayals. It was a secret that stayed hidden in plain sight for years… until a cri...

His name was Tab Hunter, and he set the nation’s hearts aflame with his pretty face and even prettier body. Tab built a career playing a macho ladies’ man in picture after picture after picture ... But behind the farm-boy physique lurked a secret shadow - one that a sleazy tabloid and unscrup...
Psycho's Norman Bates & the Hidden Life of Anthony Perkins
Переглядів 91 тис.7 місяців тому
Psycho’s Norman Bates: one of the most memorable movie characters in history. Brought to life by Anthony Perkins, Alfred Hitchcock, and a protégée of HP Lovecraft, Norman shocked audiences when he first appeared in 1960, and found an unexpected second life in sequels and TV series. And while Norman the character was known for his dark secrets, actor Tony Perkins carried secrets of his own from ...
Behind the Scenes of SOME LIKE IT HOT: Secrets, Scandals, and Marilyn's Mystique
Переглядів 534 тис.8 місяців тому
The American Film Institute called Some Like it Hot the greatest film comedy ever made. It's a tale of two musicians on the run from the mob, hiding out in an all-girl band ... and when it first hit theaters, audiences weren't ready. Coming at the tail end of the conservative 1950s, the movie made a mockery of uptight American attitudes about sex. But even more shocking than the movie's premise...
The Inside Story of All in the Family: The Rise, Fall, and Afterlife of the Bunkers

All in the Family is one of the most controversial shows ever broadcast. It featured a typical American family, arguing over topics that most other shows didn’t dare go near, and shocked America as well as the network executives who tried to do everything they could to stop it. But while Archie, Edith, Mike, and Gloria were busy making TV history, behind-the-scenes feuds threatened to tear the ...

Today, Norman Lear and his shows are famous - or infamous, depending on who you ask. But in 1971, he was an obscure TV writer and producer. A college dropout and former Nazi hunter, Norman turned to comedy after World War II. And after years of writing jokes for some of the most famous comics on television, Norman decided it was time to for a show of his own. He tackled topics that other shows ...

I have always loved this show, being half Polish & it came out at my new school I was so ashamed of being a girl who was regularly called a Pollack!, I would cry in the bathrooms at the cruelty! But after "All in the Family " I started to defend myself & call them all a bunch of Archie Bunkers!" This immediately stopped the bigotry! I was originally from New York & I had never been put down for being of Polish ancestry! But thanks 🙏 to Norman Lear I never had to deal with being called a dumb Pollack again! I ❤love your podcasts! Be PROUD!

You mentioned the Stonewall. Are you familiar with the Compton Cafeteria "riots" in San Francisco that occurred in San Francisco 3 years before Stonewall? There was an excellent documentary about it in 2005, titled: Screaming Queens: The Riot at Compton's Cafeteria. Please consider making an episode about this?

Hi Matt-I am a new subscriber so just watched this AITF episode. You did a superb job of the actors and history. In my view, your comments are right on about the importance of the show to TV history. I am 70, but I still think it is maybe the most important (and funny) show of all time. Fantastic job on your part-I found myself nodding my head in agreement dozens of time. Thank you!

Matt, as a cis, white, 51 yr old Protestant male, born and raised in the South (I know, hell of a way to open, right?) I just gotta say, God bless you. I love your vids and your tireless efforts to bring the past struggles to the consciousness of the young generation. They need to know how much fight it took to get to the modern era. My daughter is gender fluid and is always reminding me of how the pronouns now are saving lives…and I’m reminding her of how I took my life in my hands just being a 125 lb weakling musician showing up to school with an earring in EACH ear in 1988. Don’t ever stop what you’re doing. I love these shows and your special take on each one.

Doesn't polari have another name? Polidori? I don't know how to talk it - it's a kind of cockney playfulness and I only heard about it as polidori maybe 25 years ago. Nobody talks like that anymore anyway. I wonder if there are still British people who remember how to speak cockney? 50 years ago there were street stall owners on Portobello road who still could. It's ironic but I knew an older gay men about 35 years ago I'm 73 and I think he was about that age then. We weren't very close. He remembered the restrictive and coded gay life of the 50s and he claimed he liked the entertainment better then. By the time I came out in the 70's gay entertainment in bars was really only disco music and some lip-syncing drag acts if any acts at all. He loved Provincetown and he thought the gay community was far more talented and creative. And maybe that because it took more commitment to be gay. Persecution sometimes has the ability to bring out the best in people. They have to be brave. Maybe that was true but the threat of extortion is really too high a price for a live act especially if all the persecution did was appease coded hypocrisy and make a lot of money for it at the same time..

Video tip I learned from Second Thought; when you have to put in a cut; you can disguise it with a simultaneous crop and "zoom" so viewers don't spot the sudden shift in position. Then you eliminate the crop and keep on going and everything looks seamless.

My father, who was a secular Jew, worked for the ABC-TV network during the 60s; and though my Dad was different from most Jews in that he wasn't a rabid leftwinger, he hated Christians and straight Christian morality. There is an agenda, not exclusive to, but strongly supported by the Godless Jews in the media (who comprise most of Bnai Israel) to undermine straight Christian morality and instead promote 'alternative lifestyles'. Because of my Dad, I was one of the first people in the country to see 'Bewitched'. And yes, subliminally, not overtly, homosexuality was being promoted. Dick Sargent was the one originally slated to play 'Darren', but was replaced with Dick York when Tammy Grimes (also originally slated to play the 'Samantha role) rejected the pilot script and opted instead for her own TV show (also on ABC, and one of the worst failures in TV show). Dick Sargent was favored especially because he was 'gay', and Paul Lynde, too. Both Tammy Grimes and Liz Montgomery were (like Barbra Streisand and Liz Taylor) what was then commonly called-'fag hags'. Someday, someone will write something authoritative about the phenomena of the 'fag hag'; women who are not 'gay' themselves but are drawn, and sometimes very profoundly and deeply, to 'gay' guys. There is a kind of peculiar 'magic' that happens between these men and women. But I digress: Anyway, Dad and I, and the rest of my brood lived in Westport, Ct.; which is fitting when you realize that the original title for the TV show 'Bewitched' was 'The Witch Of Westport'. And there I was, as a young, still innocent lad, in the 60s, in Westport, watching the original episode of 'Bewitched'; AND-who was living in Westport at the same time (drum roll, please): LINDA BLAIR! Nowadays, I'm a born again Christian, and I have fundamentalist views, involving sex, too. BUT-I must confess I still have a taste for split pea soup! True.

Thanks for the tip about Kanopy. I joined. This movie is not available in Canada on that platform OR Tubi. The politics behind these excessive restrictions on cross border PERSONAL viewing is staggering. Usually, it's because one of our 3 major carriers has it on one of their channels. They have the CRTC in their back pocket and can therefore dictate what the CRTC allows to be viewed in this country. This forces you to subscribe to their service. Further searching shows me that Straight Jacket "IS" for purchase or rent on Google Play or UA-cam. I may do that if only to support the carrying of such content. XoXo

Whenever leadership looks to divert attention from failed policies or corruption, or anything that could be seen in a bad light, a scapegoat is needed to rile up the public. Same thing in Jim Crow Era, where rich white property owners set the poor whites and blacks against each other, about how black men were gonna steal your jobs and women. Here its how gay men were gonna corrupt your children and possibly infect even you! Anytime a group is singled out, be sure to check behind the curtain. When I think of my gay ancestors, my heart breaks for what they went through, and I realize any comfort I have now is because they suffered. Its very hard the keep the hate and bitterness tamped down.

When this show just came out, I went to IMDB to read the reviews. Like always people would put a lot of time and effort in writing down their opinion. A few weeks back, I went there to find out when the second season is going to start. Found a lot more new reviews, but most of them were incredibly tedious and infuriating ... the same LGBTQ+ conspiracy bs. People are constantly b*tching about how there is nothing really good and innovative out there to watch, but then something truly brilliant like this show is coming along and they are trying to tear it down. We all are so lucky that more and more studios and producers are willing to invest in such risky projects. The reason why so many people disliked the 1994 movie is, because it depicted some of Hollywood's finest as GAY vampires ... that movie is a f*cking masterpiece, the special effects, the requisites, the acting - top notch, it deserved way more recognition. IMDB and so many others aren't just websites for fans by fans anymore, people care increasingly about the score on those pages ... that's why fans like us need to engage more actively (social media!) to help these kind of projects to succeed.
